Mechanics in physics is the study of the motion of objects, the forces acting on them, and the changes in their state of motion under the action of forces. Mechanics can be divided into branches such as statics, dynamics, particle mechanics, rigid body mechanics, elasticity mechanics, and fluid mechanics. Statics studies the forces acting on an object in equilibrium; dynamics studies the forces acting on an object during motion; particle mechanics studies the motion of particles in space; rigid body mechanics studies the motion and deformation of rigid bodies; elasticity mechanics studies the elastic deformation of objects and the propagation of elastic waves; fluid mechanics studies the motion and deformation of fluids. Mechanics is one of the fundamental disciplines of physics and is also a foundation for disciplines such as engineering, astronomy, and geophysics.
